www.pesmedia.com Production Engineering Solutions September 2023 3 Many companies describe themselves as ‘solution providers’ these days but far from being just another meaningless buzzword, these businesses provide essential products and services to the marketplace. Without wishing to state the obvious, solution providers, rather than being simple product shifters, look at things altogether more holistically. While the ‘solution’ usually involves the provision of products at some point, it’s only part of the equation. Solution providers look at the whole process in its entirety and use that as a starting point. In many cases they act as consultants. In the manufacturing industry, in terms of the supply chain, the holistic approach is common. Skills (or more specifically the lack of them in some cases), has played a significant role in its evolution. Many companies simply don’t always have the in-house expertise, capabilities or indeed time to be able to fully evaluate potential investment options. These businesses need help from their respective supply chains. It’s why cutting tool suppliers for example often have their own application centres adorned with modern machine tools to help evaluate their customers’ processes before suggesting the right solution. Depending on the complexity of the job, these suppliers will conduct trials (often many) on their customers’ actual parts to 100% prove the process is right. For the client it provides invaluable assurances that the ‘solution’ will work. By consulting with an expert in the field, much of the legwork and uncertainty is removed. The value of this can’t be underestimated. For the supplier, it can be a risky undertaking, particularly with turnkey projects where a whole shedload of work (and expense) can be incurred at the front end without any guarantee of an order. Conversely, the rewards can be significant. It’s the same deal with subcontractors. Those worth their salt will advise their customers on the best – and most efficient – way to manufacture a component. Design for manufacture is all part of the service. So why am I talking about this? Well, providing solutions is not just the exclusive domain of machine tool companies, subcontractors and cutting tool manufacturers. Recently I visited Optimax based in Market Harborough who describe themselves as a metrology solutions provider and as you’ll learn by reading the article on pages 30-31, that’s exactly what they are. Optimax has its own Applications Suite and, as I state in the article, it’s a real Aladdin’s Cave of metrology magnificence, packed to the gunnels with cutting edge inspection equipment and technology from a select band of tried, trusted and valued partners. But it’s not just a showroom. The clue’s in the name. This is also where Optimax’s highly skilled, experienced staff can help solve your metrology conundrums through proven, holistic solutions tailored to meet your specific needs. The new bike will be ridden by Great Britain’s track cyclists at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow before competing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. British Cycling has continued its work with the best of British engineering to design and optimise its latest track bike, improving on the bike that took the top spot of the track cycling medal table at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. To build the optimum track bike, British Cycling and partner engineer firms created bespoke components using Renishaw technology, including forks and handlebars from Lotus Engineering that allow for increased aerodynamic porosity and the HBT Paris frame from Hope Technology that has helped refine headstock and seatstays. To further develop the enhanced track bike, Renishaw used its inhouse additive manufacturing (AM) expertise to rapidly produce plastic and metal prototype parts to undertake aerodynamic testing of the new design and ensure that parts were light, geometrically correct, and strong enough to endure the strain from riders. Once it confirmed the parts were viable, the company then used its RenAM 500Q AM systems to manufacture aluminium and titanium parts, including handlebars, for the competition bikes, with parts customised for individual athletes. “We have been busy designing, testing and building components for the new bike and we are really excited to see it in competitive action for the first time at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships,” explained Louise Callanan, director of additive manufacturing at Renishaw. “Working with British Cycling is a fantastic opportunity to showcase how our additive manufacturing technologies can help improve the performance of the bike and ensure that it is optimised for individual riders. Our AM expertise enabled the team to help create lightweight, complex parts for the upgraded bike to help reduce drag and improve overall speed.” With less than a year until the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the cycling squad, including five track cycling medallists from the Tokyo Games, is set to compete on the new bike at the World Championships. Tel: Email: sales@fse.co.uk Web: www.fse.co.uk NEWS Injection moulding specialist Broanmain Plastics has invested in a wire EDM machine as part of strategic investments in its expansive toolroom. To achieve precise corner and interlocking profiles in hardened materials, the Dorking-based engineering and component manufacturer has purchased a Sodick A325 wire EDM to produce complex metal geometries. The Sodick machine is regularly used by Broanmain’s engineering team to support customers with precision parts, including tooling prototype projects and customisations. In a recent project, the machine was used to create a mechanical flexure device to hold a batch of sleeve pins with high degree of concentricity. Connected to the company’s SolidWorks CAD and Bobcad systems, the wire erosion machine enables Broanmain’s engineering manager, Kamil Stec, to program the machine to run uninterrupted overnight, maximising efficiency and productivity. He said: “It’s an incredibly accurate machine that controls the cutting of complex shapes in the smallest of workpieces, no matter the hardness. Because there is no direct contact between the wire and the conductive material, it means we can machine components with thinner walls without worrying about vibration.” Helping to secure a number of new precision projects, including reconditioning a high volume of tools for retail weighing scale specialist Avery Berkel, the wire EDM machine addition has already proved invaluable, further extending Broanmain’s inhouse engineering capabilities. With more than 15 machines located on-site, including CNC mills, a CNC spark eroder, lathes and a profile projector, Broanmain has all the automated and manual equipment needed to react to ad-hoc or regular tooling and mechanical repair projects. Mr Stec added: “CNC milling gives us speed, especially with the addition of cutting tools that enable hard milling, but EDM produces the fine features and precision. It works by feeding a 0.25mm brass wire through the workpiece removing particles. “The EDM process takes longer, however, it excels at making fine cuts, very narrow grooves, precision bores, and complex shapes with tight tolerances. It’s especially good for achieving very sharp corners. We can now create tool design features such as lifters, side actions and inserts more promptly and at a lower cost to our customers.” Broanmain Plastics has also purchased service and support from Sodi-Tech, the UK agent for Sodick EDM machines, which also helped with the installation of the machine. The day itself fell on August 6th – and the laser experts decided to celebrate it in style. True to its name, Trumpf set out to trump all previous efforts by firing one of the world’s most powerful show lasers. The laser light shone for the first time on the evening of 3rd August 2023. Under the right weather conditions, the laser was visible up to 80km away. The green laser light is produced by a particularly energy-efficient laser with 3kW of power. Show lasers are not part of Trumpf’s core business, so its customers would normally use this kind of system for tasks such as welding electric-vehicle batteries. The company ships its lasers to industrial companies all over the world – the semiconductor industry, the automotive industry and the medicaldevice sector are just some of the areas in which Trumpf lasers play a key role. Alongside its laser business, Trumpf is also one of the world’s leading providers of machine tools for flexible sheetmetal fabrication. This is the business in which the company originally made a name for itself. This year marks the achievement of a major milestone. In 1923, Christian Trumpf together with two partners acquired the mechanical workshops previously occupied by Julius Geiger GmbH in Stuttgart. This laid the foundations for the company, which from 1937 operated under the name Trumpf. From the mid-1930s, the company specialised in the production of manual machinery for simple sheetmetal processing tasks. In the 1950s, the company’s focus shifted to stationary machine tools. As early as 1985, Trumpf launched its first laser laying the foundation for its rise as a laser expert. Today, the Trumpf brand stands not only for machine tools and laser technology, but also provides solutions for innovative technologies that hold the key to the future, such as e-mobility and the EUV lithography systems used to produce cutting-edge computer chips. XYZ has invested in solar panels, installing 112 capable of producing 46kWh which powers the factory during the day and has the option of exporting up to 23kWh back to the grid. Managing director Nigel Atherton commented: “As part of our operation, we are also conscious of our responsibility to the environment and sustainable working practices. We have made changes to mitigate our carbon footprint which make both economic and environmental sense.” Q XYZ Machine Tools www.xyzmachinetools.com https://newspares.xyzmachinetools.com Scan here for more XYZ Machine Tools articles Image source: Trumpf Group Scan here for more Trumpf articles Continued from page 10

Previously employed at Nikken UK as an apprentice engineer before progressing within the company into a number of applications, service and, most recently, sales positions, Mr Varley brings a wealth of experience to the role, and is a welcome addition to The Vigilance Group as it looks to strengthen both of its brands’ positions within the North of England. Commenting on the new appointment, Matt Andrew, Mach Machine Tools’ sales director, said: “We’re delighted to have Jack on board and are confident that he can help us increase market share within the area. “We’ve always performed well in the North but, having our own man based in the region, will help accelerate growth and capitalise on the many opportunities that exist there. In the next month or so, we’ll be doing something similar in the Midlands with the appointment of a new area sales engineer.” Keeping pace with the increased demand for its new and used machine tools, The Vigilance Group, over the last 12 months, has focused time and effort on building-up its applications and servicing departments at its Bristol headquarters. Conscious that having the right applications and servicing infrastructure and resources in place before expanding its sales presence in new territories too quickly, the last year has seen the group significantly increase its headcount at the Bristol site. This has resulted in it improving its spares and replacement parts operations and increasing the number of new and used machine tools held in stock. The group has also beefed-up its customer helpdesk and, for DynaPathcontrolled machine tool customers, strengthened its fast Wi-Fi enabled, remote 24/7 diagnostic, applications and monitoring support services. Mr Andrew concluded: “Service support and immediate assistance are real bugbears for customers. We have purposefully avoided the pitfalls of growing sales too quickly and then finding we could not support customers satisfactorily or to our own high standards. “The improvements we have made across all our operations, followed by new sales appointments in key regions, means we now have everything in place to realise our true potential.” Q Mach Machine Tools www.machmt.co.uk Jack Varley Mach Machine Tools strengthens Northern sales operation Miyano’s presence in this market, but also seven years since the launch of our ground-breaking LFV (low frequency vibration) programmable chipbreaking software. The technology has helped to propel us to become the largest supplier of CNC bar-fed lathes in the UK and Ireland. “There will also be a focus at the open house on the Miyano Eco Function, which ensures more efficient energy usage when operating the lathes, saving costs and helping the machines to perform at peak efficiency, an important tool in the drive to Net Zero.” As usual, present throughout the event will be numerous partner companies involved in the supply of workholding, cutting tools, parts handling, barfeeds, production control software and more. Additionally, a Red Letter Day prize draw will be open to all visitors, with the winner receiving a £1,500 experience and hotel accommodation. pesmedia.com Production Engineering Solutions September 2023 17 NEWS The Manufacturing Technologies Association’s (MTA) flagship Technology, Design and Innovation (TDI) Challenge competition has continued to showcase the imagination and design skills of a new generation of young engineers. The 2023 competition encouraged students aged 16-18 and enthusiastic about engineering and science to demonstrate their creative talent to a judging panel of industry experts. Entrants are tasked with devising an original design for a product or concept, explain its application and produce a video to demonstrate how and why their invention would benefit users. Judges were again flooded with entries and had the hard task of whittling down the submissions to a manageable shortlist. Those shortlisted were invited to Finals Day at the Yamazaki Mazak facility in Worcester where they had the opportunity to pitch their idea to the judging panel, with the winner being chosen on the day. Stewart Lane, of Renishaw, who chaired the judging panel, said: “The TDI Challenge continues to demonstrate the talent present in our aspiring engineers and once again the standard of entries was so high that judges struggled to choose which submission was the best. Each finalist should be congratulated on their achievements.” Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern, in Penylan, Cardiff continues to be a place for TDI Challenge success, with students claiming both the runner-up position and third place. This follows on from its success in 2022 when student Rhys Wijeratne also claimed third place.
